An MKV (Matroska Video) file is a multimedia container format that can store video, audio, subtitles, and metadata in a single file. It is popular for high-quality movies and TV shows because it supports multiple audio tracks and subtitle languages. To open an MKV file, use media players such as VLC Media Player, Media Player Classic, or KMPlayer. Many modern smart TVs and streaming devices also support MKV playback. If a player cannot open the file, updating the software or installing the necessary codecs may help.

In case you have difficulties with opening the MKV file, don't be afraid as it is extremely popular video format. The majority of the built-in media players cannot play MKV, however, applications such as VLC can do this right away.

MKV file is not a codec but the container file which can have different video and audio codecs in it. As far as I know, I usually open MKV files using VLC Media Player which doesn't have any problems with the compatibility with MKV.

I used MKV files quite often while downloading videos on the Internet. They look like MP4 but they may contain various audio and subtitles in the file. In case your standard media player doesn't open the MKV file, you may try VLC Media Player or some other program which supports it.
