You can usually safely delete things like old cache files, log files, unused app installers (.dmg files), Trash contents, iOS backups you no longer need, and large temporary files. I personally start with caches and old downloads because they often free up the most space without affecting anything important. Just avoid deleting unknown files from the System folder itself, as macOS needs many of those files to run properly.
