Recently, I had to format my SSD during the upgrade of my computer. What one should do when formatting his/her drive is to backup all information that he or she may need because after formatting, all the files will disappear. Your choice of file system also depends on the OS you are using and what you are going to use this device for.

I'm planning to format an SSD but want to make sure I do it correctly without causing any issues. What's the best way to format an SSD, and are there any settings or file systems I should choose?

First, make sure that your SSD is correctly recognized on your computer. Normally, I use native tools for managing disks, which does a great job. If the SSD will be used with both Windows and MacOS computers, then exFAT will be an efficient choice.

It is quite an easy procedure, though I would suggest you determine its purpose beforehand because based on that, your choice of file system can differ. Moreover, make sure that all important files are backed up, because the formatting procedure will erase everything stored there.

I have already had to format my brand-new SSD before installing it in my computer. Using the disk utility that comes along with the operating system, I have managed to do that easily. Spend some time checking the information about your drive to avoid mistakes if you have more than one device connected.
